I understand that you feel this way, but take a step back. Do you REALLY think that its your manager's job to encourage you to go the distance?
Your ambitions belong to you and therefore they are no one else's job to bolster. You boss IS a jerk, yes. But you don't need him. reply to BirdofHermes send this answer to a friendDid your boss tell you why s/he didn't want you to get the license/certification?

http://corporette.com/2012/01/10/when-youre-held-back-because-youre-too-good/ Could u're situation be similar? You know people who are in charge at work will often do whatever they can to make sure it stays that way. Get it. If they don't like it then oh well. It's your life. reply to Mercy_me send this answer to a friendFuck your manager. Why do you care? just get it anyway.
I have been working behind the scenes in my place to get more qualified after 3 promotions in a year. Im assessing my options and plotting my next moves. On hearing this, i got a phone call from the head of learning offering to pay for my course and exams provided i get them and stay with the company. Suit yourself. We are in times now where companies are tightening their belts, putting people through hell in interviews and being really picky as jobs are few and far between. Getyourself qualified. Dont worry about your boss. Theyre obv insecure. reply to Cass send this answer to a friendPeople are weird. Almost always they try to tell people what is best for them according to their own personalities.
It isn't unreasonable in some ways but it is difficult because what might work for them is not what would work for you. My advice is, when talking to people about something, you take everything under advisement. Look for the nuggets of advice that really pertain to you, your situation, future goals, etc. Ask pointed questions, regardless of what side they are taking. In this case, asking for some concrete reasons why they were opposed might help you craft the experience more to your liking if your manager was addressing specific pitfalls about getting the extra certification. In the end, make your own decision. reply to Josephine send this answer to a friend |

I will probably just get it anyways but I am extremely upset because I feel like this jerk is doing the opposite of everything a good Manager should do. I have no actual support to do my job, no moral support, and now no encouragement.
