Ask E. Jean - Tormented? Driven Witless? Whipsawed by confusion?Advice Vixens I am sorry you are going through this. Is there a way you can go over your boss' head and ask for clarification on what is expected of you?
reply to ehVwon send this answer to a friend![]() Oh man...those privatelly own company bosses/owners are the worst.
I am so sorry you are going through this, Anon. I sure wish I could help. reply to Mary send this answer to a friendWell, if you are thinking of going anyway, you might lay it out for your boss in a firm but respectful manner. I know I have had bosses like this and I finally had to tell them their demands were unrealistic and changes had to be made to get the work done. Sometimes they flat out disagreed and I had to finally go elsewhere, but sometimes they are willing to listen.
Just because someone owns the company doesn't mean they know everything about what needs to be done. It sounds as if this person may have goals but no clear way to get to them. You could use that as a starting point, asking for the ultimate goal, sell a lot? maintain quality? both? tighten the budget? and then suggest clear ways to get there. reply to Josephine send this answer to a friendOk, can I just give Anon about 30 cool points for referencing Caligula? That's amazing. Rock on, Anon.
Anyhoo, what you need here is patience. Right now job security is a thing of the past, or its like Santa Claus (AKA, nonexistent). This job sounds like it has a lot of perks, enough to put up with the bullshit while you: A. look for more work B. figure out a way that your job doesn't drive you bonkers C. quit and become a total invalid living on your mother's couch while she gossips to her friends about what a failure you are. Haha, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Anon, you've got what it takes. Analyze your job more objectively. Can you give us more details? Any way you could make up a sheet of what you think you should be responsible for and show it to your boss? He/she might appreciate the initiative and thereby ensure your job security a little more. reply to M send this answer to a friendMost small businesses are run by egomaniac, bi-polar dictators.
And the sad part? The big companies are run by egomaniac, bi-polar ass kissers. You're screwed either way:) reply to Blondie send this answer to a friend![]() My boss launched a new venture last year in a field that is totally not his expertise, and hired two talented professionals with lots of experience to make it a reality. (I'm one of them.) The problem is, he does not take advice and is sure he knows how everything works, when he is for the most part, clueless.
When given detailed plans for implementation, he usually says, "It's too complicated," pulls back whatever we are working on to do it himself, and is then surprised when the results are less than spectacular. Yes, it's his money and his project, but when we try to explain to him that we have neither the financial resources nor the staff to produce what he thinks he wants (this week, because it always changes), he becomes enraged and nasty. In spite of all of this, we have managed to create a brand that is building momentum, has a faithful following, and a good reputation. But he wants to do a total about face on everything we've been working toward for the last year. It's so disheartening. reply to anonymous send this answer to a friend |

My immediate supervisor, whom I adore, can no longer take it, and is jumping ship at the first opportunity. I wish him only the best, but it means I will be left to manage on my own with Caligula.
In some ways, this has been a dream job—work from home, in my field—but it is becoming increasingly impossible to fulfill my duties because the boss keeps changing, restructuring and basically pulling the rug out from under us at a moment's notice and yelling at us for not delivering what he wants when he doesn't even know what he wants.
I am scared, frankly. The last time I was out of work it was for almost 3 years. I'm finally just seeing light at the end of the tunnel in paying off my bills.
I will suck it up for as long as I can stand it, but the last time this happened, it had serious repercussions on my health.
And so, the job search begins. Sigh. Thanks for letting me vent.
